Somatic therapy, in plain language
What 'somatic' actually means in session — and why paying attention to the body can shift things that talk alone can't reach.
Somatic just means 'of the body.' Somatic-informed therapy pays attention to what's happening in your body alongside what you're saying out loud.
It isn't mystical and it isn't a substitute for talk therapy. It's a way of noticing the tightness in your chest when a certain memory comes up, the relief when you finally exhale, the patterns your nervous system has learned to keep you safe.
